Meet Our Team
Students and Youth for a New America (SYNA) is an organization of young people who love their country. Our love for America is not a justification for mindless conformity. Rather, our patriotism motivates us to work hard toward building a better future for the people of the United States, as well as the rest of the world.
The crisis facing the United States is having a severe impact on youth. While older generations of Americans could live comfortably by working in good paying industrial jobs, young Americans struggle to achieve financial security in very different economy. The living conditions are declining, and wages are far too low.
The costs of higher education have increased exponentially, while the opportunities opened up by a college degree have significantly decreased. The streets of formerly prosperous neighborhoods are now flooded with foreclosed homes. Rising rates of drug addiction consume and destroys the lives of millions, along with their families, and their communities. Far too many young Americans are locked in prison. Millions more are stuck in a cycle of short term jobs that offer inadequate pay, while they struggle to make payments on astronomical student loan debts.
Meanwhile, Our highways and bridges are crumbling. Our fire departments, power plants, water treatment facilities, and hospitals are in a chronic state of dysfunction. We in SYNA say that the time has come for American Rebirth.
The international situation is becoming increasingly bleak. Acts of terror occur so frequently that we have become almost desensitized to their horror. Millions of people have become refugees as their homelands are reduced to chaos. The world is faced with the possibility of some kind of large-scale global confrontation. The failure to adequately address the problem of global climate change has yielded many serious consequences. We in SYNA have not given up our hopes for global stability, and a prosperous, peaceful tomorrow, but we know this can only be achieved by an upsurge of people’s democracy.
Many young Americans have become discouraged. They feel like their increasingly difficult lives are of little concern to rich and powerful. The time has come for us to push past those who would silence us. We must step forward and halt the march toward national economic collapse and global catastrophe.
SYNA is an organization of young people that strive to create peace, jobs, democracy, and equality.
As society enters a state of ruin, the time has come for American youth to protect and care for each other.
As society enters a state of ruin, the time has come for American youth to reject the selfishness and individualism promoted in the media, and embrace a sense of community and egalitarianism.
As society enters a state of ruin, the time has come for American youth to study their history and learn about the difficulties that have been overcome by previous generations.
As society enters a state of ruin, the time has come for American youth to reject hate, racism, sexism, and all forms of bigotry, designed to redirect our anger and push the country into further chaos and decay.
As society enters a state of ruin, the time has come for American youth to defend the civil liberties and freedoms which have long been cherished in this society, and reject the calls for a greater police state or any new aggressive wars.
As society enters a state of ruin, the time has come for American youth to take history into their own hands, and fight for a new America that is no longer ruled by senseless greed, but rather by universal human values and cooperation.
SYNA is an organization that engages in service, study, and struggle.
We will work to feed, house, clothe, and aid those among our generation who have been left behind. This is our obligation. We cannot allow any more lives to be destroyed by a failing economic order.
We will work to learn about the forgotten revolutionary heritage of America’s working people. It is not just slave-owners, racist settlers, and cowboys who built the United States. Our veins also contain the blood of abolitionists, labor organizers, suffragists, and revolutionary warriors.
We will work to promote international understanding and cooperation across the globe. Patriotism means loving your own country, not displaying hatred or hostility to another.
We will work to counter the rising menace of fascism and expose its un-American and inhuman nature. In a beautiful moment generations ago, the American people worked to defeat fascism and preserve democracy, and we can most surely do this again.
We will work to demand justice and accountability from elected officials, and end the manipulation of the political process by the rich and powerful.
The best and brightest among our generation must not allow their lives to be wasted. We must reach within ourselves and embrace the collective will to survive. We must unleash the rational and logical aspects of the human psyche, and reject the selfishness and aggression that has destroyed so many civilizations in the past.
The time has come to firmly take hold of history and march triumphantly into the future.
The time for abstract discussions is over. It is time for America’s youth to raise their heads and step forward!
The WFDY Pledge
Due to the fact that SYNA is greatly inspired by the anti-fascist struggles of the 1930s and 40s, and seeks to participate in the activities of the World Federation of Democratic Youth (WFDY), all members of SYNA take the WFDY pledge as part of initiation into the organization:
We pledge that we shall remember the unity, forged in this month, November 1945, not only today, not only this week, this year, but always.
Until we have built the world we have dreamed of and fought for,
We pledge ourselves to build the unity of youth of the world, all races, all colors, all nationalities, all beliefs;
To eliminate all traces of fascism from the earth;
To build a deep and sincere international friendship among the peoples of the world;
To keep a just lasting peace;
To eliminate want, frustration and enforced idleness;
We have come to confirm the unity of all youth, salute our comrades who have died, and pledge our word that skillful hands, keen brains and young enthusiasm shall never more be wasted in war.
SYNA Stands Against Racism
Students & Youth for a New America (SYNA) sees racism as one of the greatest enemies of America’s working families. By inciting white workers to hate people of color, immigrants, muslims, or other oppressed people, their anger is directed away from the Wall Street monopolists and the international financial cartel which is destroying the country. While SYNA supports Black Nationalism and other revolutionary movements of the oppressed, we are not a white savior organization.
While membership is open to anyone regardless of race, gender, nationality, religion, or sexual orientation, we respect the entrenched revolutionary leadership of the oppressed communities. We do not seek to compete with oppressed revolutionaries, and we hold no illusion that such forces should be recruited into a majority white activist group. “The focus of our activism and education is on bringing anti-capitalist politics out of the small radicalized enclaves and toward working class majority of American society.”
